Spirituality

Spirituality

Spirituality is a free flowing element of our congregations' identity. Each of us is patching together our own evolving spirituality, individually tailored based on our unique experiences.

We believe in the free and responsible search for truth and meaning and we draw no authority from special persons or texts. We glean bits of truth from a myriad of the world's wisdoms to discover and adopt that which just "feels right" for each of us. Because Unitarian-Universalism is a creed-free religious movement, without any doctrinal test for membership all points of view are welcome.

Some Unitarian Universalists identify with more defined spiritual pathways. There are UU Humanists, Jewish UUs, UU Christians, UU Buddhists and UU Pagans Deists and Pantheist organizations. Some of us are into Process Theology, Transcendentalism, Existential and Feminist Spirituality. The list goes on and on.

More often though our spiritual paths are very individualized, somewhat personal and private.

Yet we chose to journey together, recognizing that life is a shared journey. We meet and connect on Sunday mornings, or in small group ministry sessions, or while hiking through the Appalachians. Our spirituality is not as much about the paths we chose to take, but about how we interact with others we meet along the way and what we leave behind where we have traveled.

Our spiritual lives are also abundant of ritual and liturgy. What we experience together in worship together, we carry home into our personal lives as practices and experiences.

"Within us is the soul of the whole; the wise silence, the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is equally related, the eternal One."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you would like to learn about sacred days in many religions, we invite you to click on the link for the Interfaith Calendar site. In addition to listing the dates of these observances, it has defintions of holidays, from Advent (Christian) to Zarathosht Diso (Zoroastrian), and links to dozens of religious sites from around the world.
