FALL '07 Religious Education Registration!

Roots hold me close...
Wings set me free...

These words are taken from the song, "Spirit of Life", written by Unitarian Universalist musician and activist Carolyn McDade. As we welcome you to this year's Lifespan Religious Education Program, we hope these words will come to mean something special to you too. It is our hope this year to explore the roots of our faith that ground us in tradition while empowering our spirits with the wings to fly forth and change the world for the better.

Welcome to our Lifespan Religious Education Program
Rev. Peter Friedrichs
Rev. Peter Friedrichs

There are many reasons to participate in the life of a religious community. To name just a few, church is a place where you can be cared for and nurtured, and where you can care for and nurture others. Church is also a place where you can express your deepest desires and spiritual longings and seek their fulfillment. Many churches, including UUCDC, provide opportunities for us to move out into the world and address pressing social issues through action. Finally, church is a place where we seek answers to life's deepest and most meaningful questions, and where opportunities for personal growth and transformation abound.

The Lifespan Religious Education (RE) Program at UUCDC encompasses all of these aspects of church life, and more. Our RE program is not just a place where we teach our children about our Unitarian Universalist principles and values, or where we educate them about other religious traditions, or where they learn how to be responsible citizens of the world. It is all that, and so much more. The goal of the Lifespan RE Program is to provide opportunities for personal growth and transformation for all of our members and friends, no matter how young or old you are! From Discussion Forums for adults, to creative and engaging Youth Programs, to Sunday morning children's religious education classes, our RE program offers diverse, age-appropriate classes and curricula that challenge our minds, open our hearts and feed our souls.

I invite you to participate in this vibrant program which is vital to the life of UUCDC. Take a class. Attend a forum. Become a mentor to one of our youth. Volunteer to lead a discussion group or children's class. Serve as a member of one of the many subcommittees and groups that organize and support the program. No matter where or how you get involved, the Lifespan RE Program is sure to provide you with a rich, rewarding, and even life-changing experience.

Peace, Peter

A warm welcome to Our Religious Education Program!

Religious Education at UUCDC is an invitation to try something new and an opportunity to grow and learn. The offerings we have are often unique to UUCDC and are not easily found elsewhere in the larger community. While we all share a Unitarian Universalist bond, what each one of us brings to a discussion or class is unique, the richness and depth of the program comes from each individual in attendance. Whether we are on the path to share our knowledge or the path to gain knowledge, one thing is certain, together we will all learn and grow!

This is promising to be an exciting year as we continue to build our lifespan religious education program. The Sunday School program, is returning to a curriculum model of programming after trying the Workshop Rotation Model (WoRM) for 2 years. We are excited about this move as we have bought a number of highly recommended curricula that should be fun and engaging for the children.

Also new this year is a weekly RE Chapel starting at 10:30AM on Sundays. Please join us from time to time throughout the year.

Once again, our highly renowned 9th grade Coming of Age program will be offered. Our Middle school and Senior High youth have outlined an exciting year of fun and community. The Adult Religious Education Program will continue with Sunday morning Forums in addition to offering more discussions, workshops and classes at different times throughout the week.

One of the most exciting things happening this year is our first Adult trip to Boston. This awesome trip has built in fun as well as opportunity to learn about our UU heritage! Make the most of your time with UUCDC, participate in RE!!

Take advantage of the many offerings; attend a discussion or take on a leading role; be with children, youth or adults. Whatever you choose to do with the Religious Education program, my sincere hope is that you grow spiritually, religiously and intellectually.

Warmly, Jean

Religious Education Council (REC)

The mission of the UUCDC Religious Education Council (REC) is to inspire and challenge children and adults to explore the Unitarian Universalist Principles and Sources of our Living Faith as they travel on their spiritual journey. The REC is excited about the Lifespan RE program for the 2007/2008 church year. This is a strong program for all ages - from pre-school, to teens, to adults.

Broadly, the Religious Education at UUCDC is divided into three programs: Adult RE, Youth RE (grades 7-12), and Sunday School (pre-K to grade 6). Each program is administered by a team of leaders and teachers. The leaders and teachers are parents, non-parents, church members, and friends. All members, guests, and visitors to UUCDC are encouraged to be involved in the RE program as students, participants, teachers and facilitators.

The UUCDC Religious Education Council is a group of UUCDC members dedicated to ensuring the delivery of a high-quality RE program. The REC sets the goals and objectives of the RE program and oversees the many individual levels to ensure continuity and completeness of the religious education provided. The REC consists of the chair (Rich Cairncross), the Director of Religious Education (Jean Campbell), a representative from each program team, and several at-large members. The REC meets the first Monday of every month at 7:30 PM - you are welcome to attend to learn more about the program or provide feedback.

Most importantly, the success of the UUCDC RE program depends on a reliable group of enthusiastic volunteers who deliver the curricula, forums, and RE programs. The Religious Education Council would like to thank in advance all of the volunteers throughout the RE program - we are sure 2007/2008 will be a great year for Religious Education.

This year's Religious Education Council members are:

This thoughtful, dynamic group works to provide your Religious Education program. If you have any questions or would like to offer input regarding the program please talk to one of these people.
