Thresholds

Founded by members of UUCDC in 1978, this nonprofit organization teaches a six-step decision-making course to prisoners in Delaware County. Volunteers teach inmates, or "clients", how to define situations, set goals, develop possibilities for reaching their goals, evaluate these, decide on a course of action, and to stay focused until their goals are achieved. Thresholds is based on the belief that the image a person holds of him/herself in relation to society strongly influences his/her actions. By learning to solve problems and make better decisions, a person can raise his/her self esteem. This enables an inmate to be a more productive individual upon returning to the community and significantly reduces recidivism.

Green Sanctuary

Several years ago, we voted to become a Green Sanctuary. Then we patted ourselves on the back and did nothing. We may drive a Prius, but what do we do collectively to preserve Mother Earth? Do we put our recycling containers next to our refreshment tables or do they linger, largely unused, in the coat room? Do we carpool to church? When we envision church expansion, do we build sustainability into our energy plan? If you are interested in living in harmony with the rhythms of nature, as our purposes and principles suggest, we need you to help us turn green.

Religious Education Faith in Action

Our children and youth help prepare food for distribution for our Task Force on Hunger and collect money for the UUSC’s Guest at Your Table program. Classes send Valentine’s cards to local businessmen who sell fair trade products and provide canned food for the Media Food Bank. The annual Easter Can Hunt held at church also brings in more food for the Food Bank. Adults are needed to help with this project.

Share the Plate

Like many UU churches, UUCDC donates part of designated Sunday collections to a charitable organization. Currently we share the plate on the second Sunday of every month. The organizations receiving funding are selected based on a congregational survey conducted yearly.
