COA: Coming of Age
(9th Grade, October - June)
The Coming of Age Program at UUCDC offers 9th grade youth a structured atmosphere in which to explore significant issues at this transitional stage of life and provides them with a modern Rite of Passage experience that welcomes and affirms them as they embark on their new journey towards young adulthood.
The individual and group activities provide a full range of experiences that are fun, thought provoking, social, and (yes) even educational.
Some Highlights include:
- Sunday evening classes
- learning about the UUCDC community and UU history
- selecting and working with a Mentor
- community service projects
- development of a personal belief statement
- Movie Nights
- Fund-raising activities
- field trips and retreats, including a heritage trip to Boston
- time for independent discovery and reflection
- reconnection with Nature and environmental stewardship
- culminating in the Rites of Passage weekend and Affirmation Celebrations
Program Objectives
Through regular Sunday evening class meetings, mentorship, self-exploration and guided retreat experiences, our Coming of Age program will support YOUTH as they:
- Increase their knowledge and appreciation of Unitarian Universalism by exploring its history, programs and organization at both the local (Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County) and national (Unitarian Universalist Association) levels.
- Discover the relevance of this faith community to their own lives by developing a personal value system based on exploration of their own religious and spiritual beliefs; and in so doing, recognize that spiritual development is an ongoing and fluid life-long process.
- Appreciate that they, as individuals and a group, are valued as members of our religious community in the uniqueness of their life and that this value is non-judgmental and all encompassing.
- Gain a sense of self by: assuming responsibility for their physical, mental and spiritual well-being; recognizing and accepting responsibility for decision making; testing pre-conceived personal limits; understanding that all relationships are mutually created.
- Appreciate the interconnected web of existence through commitment and service to family, UUCDC, and the wider community; and expand their vision of the world by encouraging them to encounter different views, cultures and life experiences.
Our Coming of Age program will provide PARENTS and GUARDIANS with:
- a support system that reinforces the Purposes and Principals of our faith community.
- a respected member of our community as a mentor and role model for their child as they make the transition from childhood to youth.
- a safe, compassionate and loving community in which their child can test their new self.
It will provide our RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY with:
an opportunity to be actively engaged in the education, guidance and support of our young men and women of tomorrow
the honor of affirming and congratulating the Coming of Age participants upon their completion of the Program; and, welcoming those who so choose into full membership in the Congregation
And it will provide MENTORS with:
Program Components
The UUCDC Coming of Age program consists of four components:
- Mentored Learning
- Practical Testing
- Enacted Ritual
- Empowering Story and Community Celebration
Mentored Learning
The youth's mentor will be a well-respected member or friend of the UUCDC faith community who will work with the youth to accomplish the goals of the program. The individual will bring to the youth a perspective on the congregation, a connection to its past, a sense of pride and commitment to that community and its young people, an understanding of the culture and history of the church society and how one best functions within its parameters.
The mentor will:
- encourage the learning and conquering of physical skills designed to bolster self-confidence;
- aide in the selection of a community service project to help the youth see the needs of the larger community (as appropriate the mentor may participate in the project with the youth);
- assist the youth in exploring their own spiritual development by unselfishly sharing their (the mentor's) own thoughts and ideas;
- enjoy the natural world together using it as a classroom, meditation sanctuary, recreational facility, and/or background for group experiences.
Practical Testing
The UUCDC Coming of Age program will engage youth in activities that push them beyond their normal comfort level by asking them to stretch their boundaries. These stretching activities will be both value-centered experiences and physical challenges, which take place in a safe and supportive environment. These activities may include a river-rafting trip, values clarification workshop, team building & individual ropes challenges, day hike, solo vigil, and credo writing.
The youth will participate in the creation of a group covenant addressing participation, challenge by choice, positive language, physical and emotional safety, plus issues suggest by the youths to aide in the creation of a safe, caring, supportive community. They will accept the responsibility of maintaining that covenant throughout the duration of the program.
Built into the program will be times for reflection on those things learned, challenges met and pride in accomplishment of "the impossible".
Enacted Rituals
Rituals mark life transitions: child dedications, faith-community recognition of youth (bar/bas mitzvahs, confirmations, Coming of Age ceremonies), graduations, weddings, and memorial services. The UUCDC Coming of Age program will draw on ancient and modern traditions; the ritual will be generated by the COA community of leaders, mentors and elders and will be intergenerational in nature.
Empowering Story and Community Celebration
During the Rite of Passage Weekend, the leaders, mentors and program elders, acting as a Council of Elders, will hear the youth's vigil stories and receive them into community. The youth will symbolically mark these changes during the Rite of Passage Weekend through symbolic naming, marking, and presentation (return) to their parents.
Additionally, the youths will participate in, and be recognized by the entire congregation as part of a Sunday morning Affirmation Worship Service. UUCDC will celebrate the completion of the youths' participation in the Coming of Age program through worship, story sharing, symbolic gift giving, a congregational reception and an evening party for the youth. This celebration will include all the generations of the church society, ensuring that traditions are created for the younger generation to hope for when they become of age.
Finally, the Congregation will recognize that the youth has become of age by offering all the rights, privileges and obligations of membership in UUCDC.

Curriculum Resources
In our Coming of Age classroom we draw upon a number of curriculum & program resources. Our overall philosophy draws heavily upon the teachings of ICA Journeys Leadership Institute on Coming of Age programming. We also use materials, lessons & activities from the following resources and have also written some of our own material.
How Can I Know What to Believe? helps young people explore, formulate and articulate their attitudes and beliefs about concepts of God/Goddess/or a High Power, death, and Unitarian Universalism.
You the Creator unleashes creativity, as participants discover they are part of the creative forces in the world. Seven major themes explore and celebrate creativity on multiple levels.
