Accessibility at UUCDC
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 defines a disability as a "...physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." Nearly 50 million people (1 in 5 of the US population) in the United States are either born with or acquire a disability in their lifetime - including people of all ages, races, sexual orientations, cultures, economic and social backgrounds, and religions. Some disabilities are more obvious and many are completely invisible.
At UUCDC, we strive to create an environment in which we all can live, learn, play, sing, work, meditate, reflect, and pray, so that everyone will be able to grow and thrive together. We recognize that each person, whether they live with a recognizable disability or not, is unique. And it is important to us that everyone be welcome here.
Please let us know if there is something we can do to make your worship experience a better one.
Is UUCDC accessible to people who are not ambulatory?
Our church entrance is wheelchair accessible, but the door does not open automatically. Assistance may be needed to open the door. Our greeter is always close, and will assist you as needed. Our sanctuary is on the upper level and there is an elevator that will accommodate a person in a wheelchair or anyone else who has difficulty with the stairs. The elevator can be operated by one person; however the door is somewhat heavy. If you have any difficulty with it the greeter will help you with the door and answer any questions you may have about the operation of the elevator.
After the service, our coffee hour is in Fellowship Hall. There is a ramp into Fellowship Hall down the hall to the right.
Our accessible bathroom is down the opposite hall, to the left of fellowship hall. There are also single sex wheelchair accessible bathrooms located on the lower level.
What about people with hearing impairments?
Assisted hearing devices are available from the ushers before the service and may be used anywhere in the Sanctuary. We do not have a sign language interpreter at this time, but arrangements could be made given sufficient notice and need.
Do you have large print hymnals and programs?
Copies of hymns from the large print Version of "Singing the Living Tradition" are available from the ushers. The Sunday bulletin is already printed in a relatively large print format, but if you need further assistance, please let us know.
The Unitarian Universalist Association's publication "World Magazine" is also available on cassette tape for any members of UU churches who may find that format best for them. Simply contact the church administrator [insert link] to arrange for this.
My child has learning differences. May my child participate in the church school or youth group?
Our religious education programming is open and available to everyone. Please speak with our Director of Religious Education to discuss how we might best accommodate your child's needs and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for them.
